Growing up in the Douglass Neighborhood, Kevin saw first hand the struggles of many Memphis citizens.
After graduating from Douglass High School, Kevin went to the University of Memphis, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice.
With this degree and his long experience with the poverty surrounding his neighborhood, Kevin understood
that Memphis needed POVERTY ERADICATION. He has now made it his mission to help the city that gave him so
much. Although young he knows the importance of the Memphis culture while maintaining the need to protect
the city's citizens.
Education
- 1. Number ONE priority is ensuring schools in District 7 are receiving funding to guarantee equal opportunities for all students.
- 2. Listen to the voices of teachers and principals and fight for them to ensure they are receiving the resources they need. This also includes protecting their right to organize and negotiate for better wages, working conditions, and job security.
- 3. Partner up with local programs that can help with mentorship, skill workshops and mental health.
- 4. Partner up with businesses to hire high school and college graduates.
Taxes
- 1. We must do something about PILOT (payment-in-lieu of taxes) contracts. Currently companies with these contracts only pay 25% of what is actually due of their property taxes. In other words they receive a 75% tax discount. This is unfair and we must either remove PILOTs or fight for a percentage increase for the amount they must pay.
- 2. Fight for tax breaks for local businesses. Also provide resources to help open new or expand local businesses throughout District 7.
- 3. Regarding xAI, we must fight back against the corruption that Elon Musk is taking advantage of. If the company will be here we must ensure they are paying taxes that they can pay. This means pushing for a tax increase on them and BIG CORPORATIONS.
Health
- Provide easy access to health care and urgent care through transportation.
- Ensure everyone has an opportunity to receive urgent care without making it high cost.
- Have monthly free clinic checkups at community centers for community residents.
Safety
- 1. Fight back against the Memphis UNSAFE task force. District 7 has been targeted and instead of feeling safe, residents are fearful of being discriminated against. We must ensure that the Shelby County Sheriff's Department does not collaborate with ICE.
- 2. Work directly with the Sheriff to start community policing programs throughout District 7. We must ensure that there is a good relationship with the sheriff's department and community residents WITHOUT the involvement of the task force.
- 3. Better training and working conditions for officers. We must work with MPD for a faster way to respond to 911 calls. This includes finding new ways to answer non-violent 911 calls that include mental health calls.
- 4. Start funding and fixing our jail. This includes better conditions in the jail, hiring new nurses to help take care of inmates with health issues, and a faster way to process inmates who are being held over petty crimes.
Community
- 1. Acknowledge the food drought happening in North Memphis where people do not have easy access to grocery stores. Using the infrastructure around the government should open government-owned stores with emphasis on job training, fair wages, and affordability.
- 2. There are too many abandoned houses throughout District 7. The government should work to fix these properties and provide affordable housing to low income families.
- 3. Help local businesses with resources to ensure buildings are being properly maintained. Similar to the abandoned houses, there are too many abandoned buildings around District 7. Either work to help local businesses open in new locations or use these properties to open food pantries, housing for the homeless, or find other uses for them.
